News from 6 February 2006:

It was great news when Mr Nigel Hudson (Poomsae Director UK) formally advised Master Glen Culbert (5th Dan) of his successful application for the role of NI Poomsae Coach:

"Dear Master Culbert

It is with great pleasure that I write to you on this occasion, following my recent appointment as Director of Poomsae UK it is one of my first duties to select and put in place National and Regional Poomsae training, to this end I can now officially confirm your position in this structure as the Northern Ireland Regional Poomsae coach. After our recent meetings and conversations I am sure you shall fulfil this role admirably.

It is vitally important that all our regional coaches along with our National coach are working to the same template and to this end there shall be a meeting for all regional coaches along with the National coach and myself on Sunday the 5th of March. Nigel M Hudson (Poomsae Director UK) For and behalf of the
BRITISH TAEKWONDO CONTROL BOARD (WTF)"

The NI Squad are very lucky to have Master Culbert in this role, being one of the few coaches, either in the UK or Ireland, to hold the International Poomsae Juding qualification. Also Master Culbert, being in the UTA, has as his instructor Master Shin (8th Dan) who is a technical advisor to the UK Pomsae Squad.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

For many years sparring has grabbed the interest of Taekwondo players with the desire to compete at the highest level in the Olympic Games. This has proven to be highly beneficial to the development of Taekwondo around the world.

The World Taekwondo Federation have however also recognised that the technical, non-fighting aspect to Taekwondo now needs to be developed to a similar high level. Perfecting movements within traditional patterns or pulling off spectacular ‘movie’ style kicks will be a challenge and competitive outlet for non-fighters.

We in Northern Ireland must now start resourcing promotion and organisation for attendance at technical competition events.

The aim is promote technical competition opportunities to potential players within the BTCB(NI) and to encourage the higher standard players, and in particular women, to enter competition training. Through selection, which will promote healthy competition, the better players training within the NI Squad will then compete at open, national and international competitions.

The BTCB(NI) is supporting the establishment of the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union which will allow a NI team in its own right to eventually compete at the world’s second largest event, the Commonwealth Games.

The benefits if the plan is achieved will be the same as for successful sparring competition and will include:

BTCB(NI) members
> An outlet to test their Taekwondo skills.
> Increased satisfaction and enjoyment of the members involved.
> Respect and excitement of being in a successful Technical Squad.
> Opportunities to compete nationally and internationally.

Local community
> Enjoyment from the success of local people.
> Practical support for local charities as part of a Demo Team.

BTCB(NI)
> Growing pool of trained players.
> Promotion of the martial art to local community.
> Success at competitions and respect for BTCB(NI) within and outside of Northern Ireland.
> Northern Ireland recognised and invited to competitions.
